FAQ's

What is Photovoltaic?

Photo refers to Photons and voltaic refers to electricity. PV technology generates electricity via electrons freed by the interaction of photons from the sun with a semi-conductor. In case of Photovoltaic system, also known as solar energy system, Silicon is the Semi-Conductor mainly used in Solar Modules or Solar Panels. The basic unit of Silicon is called a cell. Many cells are arranged together to form the Solar module. The generated electricity is Direct current, which is converted into Alternating current via Solar Inverter.

What is Solar PV System?

Solar PV or Solar Photovoltaic System is a arrangement of Solar Modules, Solar DC to AC Inverter, various kinds of cables, mounting structure for Solar Modules, adequate switch gears for protection of equipments, earthing, lightning protection system and all allied accessories and spares. Solar Modules or Solar Panels are array of Silicon wafers arranged in series connection that generates electricity when exposed to solar irradiation.

In short, Solar PV System or simply put solar system converts solar irradiation into usable electricity.

How does Solar PV System benefit me?

Whether you are a household owner or industrial-commercial user, electricity is getting dearer with the passing years. As per a study, since 2005 to till date, electricity costs have been on ascent of over 5.4% on year on year basis. It is highly imperative that one should switch to alternate sources of energy in order to save money as well as reduce the impact of carbon footprints on the nature.

Solar PV Systems help households, Commercial spaces and Industries to curb electricity costs. One can install solar PV system on their rooftop of other usable areas and generate electricity needed for their use. For household purposes, GoI is also providing enormous subsidy under the PM Suryaghar Yojana. Call Sarvayogam to know more about how to get benefits under this scheme.

How to know what size of Solar PV system is appropriate for me?

Solar PV Systems are measured in Kilowatt (kW). As a general thumb rule, 1 kW Solar PV System generates approximately 4 units (measured in kWH) per day (An average of 365 days, with rainy & cloudy days included). During summers, the generation peaks and during monsoon the generation takes a dip. You need to gauze your monthly & seasonal electricity unit consumption and calculate the size accordingly. Also consider additional electricity needs like addition of Air condition or an E-Vehicle or simply addition of family members. Decide the size accordingly. Solar System size is based on the Watt capacity of Solar Modules and the number of panels installed.

For e.g. if one installs 10 Solar modules of 540 Watt Peak each, then the total size of the Solar PV System is 5400 Watts or simply 5.4 kW.

Using the rule of 4 units per kW, a 5.4 kW Solar PV System will generate approx 21 units per day

Is solar viable for my manufacturing unit?

Yes sir. Solar energy is much viable for industries and homes alike. Usually, the RoI in case of industrial solar units is 3-4 years. The life of the project is for 25 years. Sarvayogam solar conducts due diligence study and ascertains the energy consumption pattern and suggests correct size of Solar PV System.

How to apply for Solar PV System for home?

At the onset, keep your electricity bill ready, AADHAR card & Bank details ready in soft copy. Study your consumption pattern & decide the size of the solar system you want to go for. Tab your electricity consumer number ready. The number will act as reference for the application.

  • Visit the PM- SURYAGHAR NATIONAL PORTAL FOR SOLAR
  • Click on Apply for Rooftop Solar & Register as a consumer
  • Select a vendor and complete the process
  • Contact the vendor and they will visit your home
  • Complete the formalities and get the solar system installed
  • Apply for the meter & the DISCOM will install Solar meter and bi-directional meters
  • Stay in touch with the vendor for maintenance & service
  • Government subsidy shall be credited into your savings account within 45-60 days of installation of meter by your DISCOM

Why should I adopt solar energy?

You might have noticed a change in your energy expenditure and must be wondering why. Actually over the last 6-7 years, energy rates have increased from about Rs. 3-4 per unit to Rs. 8.5/- per unit. It means that energy prices have doubled in these years. From here on the energy charges are bound to increase in an exponential way, as the conventional sources of energy are becoming dearer. Hence, it is imperative that every individual will have to adapt to greener energy source to save the environment as well as his/ her pocket.

The energy cost today will almost triple in next 10-15 years. If you are a manufacturer and your product requires a lot of electricity, your #1 expense will be energy. Hence if you switch to Solar Energy today, you can insure your future in this aspect. A Solar PV system has a life span of 25 years. In case you invest in Solar PV System today, you could get your investment back in 3-4 years, which means you can have access to free electricity for the next 21 years.

Solar energy doesn’t require much space; complicated installation processes & is light on maintenance compared to other renewable energy sources like tidal energy, geothermal or wind. In a nutshell, whether it is a home or an industry, investing in Solar PV System or adopting solar energy is a wise decision.

How does Solar system work?

Solar PV System consists of Solar Module, Solar Inverter, Cables, earthing and allied safety components and mounting structure. Solar Modules or panels convert falling sunlight into electricity. The generated current is direct current (DC), which cannot be directly used in our households or commercial spaces. This direct current is converted (correct term is inverted) into alternating current (AC) by an inverter, which can then be used to power your home or business.

Does Solar Panel generate electricity during monsoon & winters?

It is one of the greatest myths that Solar panels do not generate electricity during monsoon & the generation in winters is also very low. Solar panels do generate electricity during monsoon and winter seasons, though the output may be slightly reduced due to lower sunlight exposure. They are designed to work efficiently even in cloudy weather conditions.

What is net metering in Solar?

Net Metering is a system that allows solar energy users to receive credits for the excess electricity they generate and send back to the utility grid.

When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home or business consumes, the surplus power is exported to the grid. Later, when your solar system isn’t generating power — such as during the night — you can draw electricity back from the grid.

A bi-directional (net) meter tracks both the power you send to the grid and the power you consume from it. When excess energy is exported, the meter runs backward, effectively reducing your electricity bill. You are billed only for the net energy used over a billing cycle.

What is the life of Rooftop solar system?

Solar cells have a great shelf life of more than 35 years. However exposure to constant irradiation reduces their efficiency over time. A Solar module loses its generating capacity by almost 1% per year. Considering this de-gradation, most Tier-1 Solar module producers provide a 30 year warranty on solar modules. At the end of 30 years, the generation of solar module shall be roughly 80% of the initial capacity.

E.g if a Solar module generates 600 Watt Peak of electricity today, at the end of 30 years, its generation capacity will be approx 480 Watt Peak.

The guarantee defines the life of the Rooftop solar system, & hence it can be safe to say that the life of solar rooftop systems nowadays is 30 years. It is also defined by the power purchase agreement that you sign with your electricity provider.

Again there are factors like you replacing the solar modules due to up gradation in technologies.

What is the cost of maintenance of Solar system?

Solar systems require minimal maintenance. Most of the time, basic cleaning of the panels every few months is sufficient to keep them running efficiently. On average, the annual maintenance cost is ₹1,000 to ₹3,000, depending on the system size and location. Sarvayogam Solar also offers Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC) for added convenience and support. Please contact our team for more details.
